Château Mouton Rothschild

In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild bought at auction the Château Brane Mouton in Pauillac, and renamed it Château Mouton Rothschild, which in 1855 was classified as the second grand cru. After the death of Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1870, the Château remained in the family, with little development until 1922 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild (great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel) took control of the estate. He became fully involved in it in 1923, and was the architect of the resurrection of the Castle. In 1924, he imposed bottling on the castle, which had hitherto been delivered in barrels to merchants (a first in Bordeaux).
